Stanley Herbert
Cooke was the first manager of W H Smith in the City, whose
premises are now occupied by Oxfam.
He decided
to branch out on his own into new premises in Queen Street.
These premises since then have been Green’s Wet Fishmongers
and are now occupied by Daniel’s. Coincidentally those
premises are also owned by the business pioneering this
website.
He then
moved across the street into the premises by “Lance Jordan
Photographers Ltd” and in the 1920’s Stanley Herbert died at the
age of 37 leaving his wife Beatrice Cooke running the business
with their son Stanley Reed who was involved in the business
from the age of 13.
After
serving in the Army, SR Cooke married Betty Iles and in 1952
Martin was born. |
